چکیده

We explore the power of semidefinite programming (SDP) for finding additive -approximate Nash equilibria in bimatrix games. We introduce an SDP relaxation for a quadratic programming formulation of the Nash equilibrium (NE) problem and provide a number of valid inequalities to improve the quality of the relaxation. If a rank-1 solution to this SDP is found, then an exact NE can be recovered. We show that for a (generalized) zero-sum game, our SDP is guaranteed to return a rank-1 solution. Furthermore, we prove that if a rank-2 solution to our SDP is found, then a 5 11 -NE can be recovered for any game, or a 1 3 -NE for a symmetric game. We propose two algorithms based on iterative linearization of smooth nonconvex objective functions which are designed to produce rank-1 solutions. Empirically, we show that these algorithms often recover solutions of rank at most two and close to zero. We then show how our SDP approach can address two (NP-hard) problems of economic interest: finding the maximum welfare achievable under any NE, and testing whether there exists a NE where a particular set of strategies is not played. Finally, we show that by using the Lasserre/sum of squares hierarchy, we can get an arbitrarily close spectrahedral outer approximation to the convex hull of Nash equilibria, and that the SDP proposed in this paper dominates the first level of the sum of squares hierarchy.

Efficient Algorithms for Constant Well Supported Approximate Equilibria in Bimatrix Games

In this work we study the tractability of well supported approximate Nash Equilibria (SuppNE in short) in bimatrix games. In view of the apparent intractability of constructing Nash Equilibria (NE in short) in polynomial time, even for bimatrix games, understanding the limitations of the approximability of the problem is of great importance. We initially prove that SuppNE are immune to the addi...

Perfect and Proper Refinements of All Extreme Nash Equilibria for Bimatrix Games

In previous work, bimatrix games were expressed as parametric linear mixed 0− 1 programs and the EχMIP algorithm was proposed to enumerate all their extreme Nash equilibria. In this paper, we use a maximal cliques enumeration algorithm to enumerate all Nash maximal subsets. We use a pair of linear programs in order to identify perfect extreme equilibria and enumerate all Selten maximal subsets....

On the effect of risk aversion in bimatrix games

Nash equilibria with identical supports are compared for bimatrix games that are different with respect to the risk aversion of player 2. For equilibria in 2× 2-bimatrix games and for equilibria with efficient supports in coordination games it is established for which cases increased risk aversion of player 2 benefits or hurts player 2.

Zero-Sum Game Techniques for Approximate Nash Equilibria

We apply existing, and develop new, zero-sum game techniques for designing polynomial-time algorithms to compute additive approximate Nash equilibria in bimatrix games. In particular, we give a polynomial-time algorithm that given an arbitrary bimatrix game as an input, outputs either an additive 1 3 -Nash equilibrium or an additive 1 2 -well-supported Nash equilibrium; and we give a polynomial...

On proper refinement of Nash equilibria for bimatrix games

In this paper, we introduce the notion of set of ε-proper equilibria for a bimatrix game. We define a 0–1 mixed quadratic program to generate a sequence of ε-proper Nash equilibria and show that the optimization results provide reliable indications on strategy profiles that could be used to generate proper equilibria analytically. This approach can be generalized in order to find at least one p...
